FRAGMENTS
Fragments of Books II-IV
III
Fr. 1. Deus âgodâ or dea âgoddessâ is in fact a general name for all.... Varro, in the third book of the treatise addressed to Cicero, says: âSo let them give answer why they say dei âgods,â when in reference to all of them the old-time Romans used to say divi.â
Fr. 2. Figor âI am transfixedâ is by the old writers inflected in two ways in the perfect tense. For we find both fictus and fixus;... Varro in the third book of the treatise addressed to Cicero has âfixum.â
Fr. 3. Though the old writers say that the name leaena âlionessâ is not good Latin, still it has the force of authority. For they used to say leo âlionâ both as masculine and as feminine.... But lea âlionessâ Varro has, in the third book of the treatise addressed to Cicero: âJust as panthera âpantherâ and lea âlionessâ are not.â IV
Fr. 4. Varro in the fourth book of the treatise On the Latin Language: âProlubium and lubidoi âdesireâ are derived from lubet âit is pleasingâ; whence also the grove of Venus Lubentina gets its name.â
Fragment of Book VIII
Fr. 5. (5) The eighth book of Marcus Varroâs treatise On the Latin Language, addressed to Cicero, maintains that no regard is paid to Regularity, and points out that in almost all words usage rules. (6) âAs when we decline,â says he, âlupus âwolf,â gen. lupi, probus âhonest,â gen. probi, but lepus âhare,â gen. leporis; again, paro âI prepare,â perf. paravi, and lavo âI wash,â perf. lavi, pungo âI prick,â perf. pupugi, tundo âI pound,â perf. tutudi, and pingo âI paint,â perf. pinxi. (7) And although,â he continues, âfrom ceno âI dineâ and prandeo âI lunchâ and poto âI drinkâ we form the perfects cenatus sum, pransus sum, and potus sum yet from destringor âI scrape myselfâ and extergeor âI wipe myself dryâ and lavor âI bathe myselfâ we make the perfects destrinxi âI am scrapedâ and extersi âI am driedâ and lavi âI have had a bath.â
(8) âFurthermore, although from Oscus âOscan, Tuscus âEtruscan,â and Graecus âGreekâ we derive the adverbs Osce âin Oscan,â Tusce âin Etruscan,â and Graece âin Greek,â yet from Gallus âGaulâ and Maurus âMoorâ we have Gallice âin Gallicâ and Maurice âin Moorishâ; also from probus âhonestâ comes probe âhonestly,â from doctus âlearnedâ docte âlearnedly,â but from rarus ârareâ there is no adverb rare, but some say raro, others rarenter.â
(9) In the same book Varro goes on to say: âNo one uses the passive sentior, and that form by itself is naught, but almost every one says adsentior âI agree.â Sisenna alone used to say adsentio in the senate, and later many followed his example, yet could not prevail over usage.â
(10) But this same Varro in other books wrote a great deal in defence of Regularity.
